At the Paralympics in Sydney, Ireland's Tom Leahy has just won the silver medal in the Men's Discus. The 42 year-old from Fermoy attended his first Games in New York in 1984, so this is his 5th Olympics, and this silver is his 7th medal. He claimed 2nd place with a season's best 16 metres 5 centimetres.
In the sailing event Irish skipper John Twomey provided the surprise of the regatta when he won race four of the sonar class. Before the race Twomey was in the 11th spot on the points table. But he sailed strongly, moved into the lead on the first downwind leg and stretched away for the rest of the race. Twomey is the fourth different winner of the four races to date. Australian Noel Robins has taken over first position in the points table, with Germany's Jens Kroker just two points back.
Ireland's Boccia Bowling team in Sydney, John Cronin and Margaret Grant, have made it into the quarter-finals of the individual competition, just one match away from a medal.
