Irish canoeist Gary Mawer has qualified for the semi-finals of the Men's 1000m Kayak singles event. Mawer's time of 3:45.787 earned him sixth place in Heat 2 and automatic qualification to Thursday's semi-finals. Mawer is Ireland's top canoeist and has competed successfully at the top level, he was second in the world Marathon Championships in '98 and a finalist in the World Sprint Championships in '97.
