Olympics: Australia cracks down on drugs

The Australian Government today said importers of sports drugs would for the first time face jail sentences as the country gears up for the Olympic Games in Sydney in September. Until now, importing sports drugs such as steroids into Australia was not a crime. Under the new law, people importing sports drugs would face prison sentences of up to five years and, or, a fine of up to A$100,000(£50,000). "This is a key initiative in the lead up to the Olympics Games and is a clear signal that Australia is serious about the issue," Minister for Justice and Customs Amanda Vanstone said in a statement.
