The American black civil rights leader, Dr Martin Luther King was assassinated on the 4th of April 1968.

Dr King was shot dead in the southern US city of Memphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a march of sanitation workers protesting against low wages and poor working conditions

A black day in the long history of slavery, emancipation and segregation of the black population of the United States.

On this week's programme, we dip into that history as we explore the American Civil Rights Movement – and the dark days of slavery that preceded it.
