Episode Notes
The County Measure uncovers the vibrant arts, history, heritage, sport, and diverse communities of Co. Leitrim. Join writer and broadcaster Vincent Woods as he wanders across his native Leitrim.
From Mohill and Ballinamore in the south, to the coast of Leitrim in the north, via Carrick-on-Shannon, Ballinaglera, Glenfarne, Manorhamilton and Kiltyclogher. Vincent takes a measure of all that the "The Wild Rose County" has to offer.
With contributions from Leitrim's legendary LGFA, Edwina Guckian, John Reynolds, sculptor Jackie McKenna, musicians Seán Gilrane and Mohammad Syfkhan, The County Measure reflects the richness and complexity of life in Leitrim today.
"The landscape of Leitrim unfolds from the water, Sliabh an Iarainn rising up in the distance. This is a homecoming and a leave-taking- taking this measure of my home county is also the final programme in our County Measure series. This is number 32. And here, in this borderland of music and hard history, you might find Sally Rooney's chess player in an arts centre or the echoes of John McGahern's voice and vision in people and place. Leitrim pulls you in- and hard as you try, you'll never quite work out the complex Leitrim Equation," says Vincent Woods.
Composer and singer Ailie Blunnie will unveil brand new music on the programme about an important event in Leitrim's history.
Dancing brothers Frank and Pat Fox recall the days of border road closures, UDR and British army patrols on the border near Garrison, and dance on a bridge that marks the border between Leitrim and Fermanagh.
The County Measure is a landmark RTÉ Radio 1 series that explores the identity and communities of Ireland's 32 counties. This is the final edition of the series.
