John Murray spent a day working! Yes, real work in a real hotel, The Castlecourt Hotel in Westport A full day of it and it was hard! But by the end John had a new found appreciation for the people in the hospitality business and what hard work it is!
The Castlecourt Hotel is owned and run by sister and brother team Anne and Joe Corcoran who also are Proprietors of the Westport Plaza Hotel. The Castlecourt has 160 bedrooms approx. The Deputy General Manager Vincent Nugent put John Murray through his paces – assisted by Duty Managers, Elizabeth Conway and Deirdre Shevlin. You will also hear Blathnaid who is in charge of the Front of House team And Valerie Kelly is in charge of “housekeeping”, and John proves he could stand the heat under the tutelage of Executive Head Chef, Alain Gaulier.

TUAM UP AND SPIT ‘EM OUT
In the hotel for the day was John Concannon, Managing Director JFC Manufacturing based in Tuam, JFC are a big company with manufacturing plant in England and operations in Poland and The Netherlands. The 2 Johns talked about business in general and how JFC continues to prosper because of its diversity and geographical spread. Plastics, water systems, farm machinery, recycling systems and many other light and not so light engineering are some of what they do.. They evenhave their own award - the JFC innovation awards, worth €15, 000 to the winner. And this year’s winner, a willow Project developed by the Farrelly brothers in Kells Co Meath, was featured on The Business recently.

SEND A BOY ON A MAN’S ERRAND
Hotel Manager, Vincent Nugent, sent John off to a local joiners to collect a headboard for a bed. Michael Cox runs the firm, and he shocked everyone by saying business is good. John tried to discover the secret but all he came away with was a headboard
