Episode Notes
Seascapes tonight hears from rower Fergus Farrell, who last month survived being the subject of a medical rescue from the middle of the Atlantic. Fergus is a former professional rugby player, who defied all odds to learn to walk again after a traumatic spinal injury in 2018. He set out from the US in June in an attempt to set a new world record for a two man unsupported Transatlantic row.
But 600 miles into the row, he fell ill and had to be extracted from the 6.2 metre rowing boat. Fellow rower, Galway rugby player and adventurer Damian Browne, continued on the row.
Fergus told Lorna Siggins about the row and how he was rescued.
Damien Browne is still at sea and you can follow his journey on his podcast Deep Roots. You can also track his progress on the website projectempower.ie
Also tonight, author and sailor John O'Donnell recalls his experience of sailing a number of times in the Round Ireland yacht race. The 700 mile race was recently sailed from Wicklow Sailing Club and is an endurance test for all competitors.
John O'Donnell is a barrister and author who has contributed to many RTE shows and his retelling of this tough race will be evocative for anyone who has ever been to sea.
