Brent geese are a familiar and much-loved sight along Ireland's coastline during the winter months, arriving each autumn after an incredible migration from the Canadian Arctic. Smaller and darker than many other geese, they are easy to recognise by their black necks and the small white patch near their faces.
In Ireland, large flocks gather on estuaries, salt marshes and coastal fields, where they feed mainly on eelgrass and grasses. Their presence is an important indicator of healthy coastal habitats, and many areas are protected specially because of the role they play in supporting these birds. By spring, the brent geese leave Ireland once again, beginning their long journey back north to breed.
