Episode Notes
30 years ago today, dentist John O'Grady was kidnapped by Dessie O'Hare of the INLA.
O'Hare and his henchmen went on the run with Dr. O'Grady for almost a month, during which time O'Hare removed Dr. O'Grady's fingers with a chisel.
Joe spoke to Dave Darragh, John's brother in law, who told Joe about what his family went through, and also the extraordinary operation that was put in place to pay a ransom for John's release. Fr Brian Darcy told how he drove the car full of ransom money to Cork, and discovered that John O'Grady had been freed in Cabra just moment before the money was to be delivered. Joe was also joined by Dr. Greg Smyth, a close friend of John O'Grady's, who shared his memories of John before and after this traumatic episode.
Eyewitnesses and prison guards shared their memories, as well as journalists Fergal Keane, Kevin O'Connor and Rory Godson, who covered the story at the time.
