It’s not often we give two bites of the cherry to the same subject covered on the one programme, but today’s Liveline just had too many cherries to pick from!

Earlier in the show, and in an earlier story, we focused on Jo, a female Trump supporter from North Dakota, squaring up against Vincent, a Trump critic (to put it mildly), who lamented his rise to the Oval Office.

But as the show drew to a close, Joe Duffy found himself refereeing another ferocious head-to-head, this time between two Irish callers, Ann Clinton and Owen McMahon.

And it was that earlier female caller to the show, Jo from North Dakota, that Ann initially took issue with.

“Any woman who is upset by female genitalia replica clothing, and would vote for a man who, out of his own mouth, professed to be a sexual assault man, who feels he can do that to women, there is just a brain freeze in her head, somewhere.”

On the other hand, Owen McMahon, professing not to be a particular admirer of Donald Trump, but someone who probably would have voted for him over Hillary Clinton, challenged what he saw as a bias in the “liberal media” against any Republican president.

“Trump appears to be the type of sexual braggart and assaulter that Bill Clinton was. I never heard the same type of opprobrium against Bill Clinton that there is against Trump.”

Funny, there was a small issue of a relentless pursuit by a certain lawyer called Kenneth Starr, the wall-to-wall coverage of the Lewinsky affair, and a move to impeach Bill Clinton, but I’m sure we can set those aside for the moment.

But back to Liveline. And as the temperature rose, Ann decided she’d had enough.

“I’m going to bow out now, because I can see that to all you men, all that matters is size. Obviously, size does matter.”

(Crowd size, maybe?)
