Trish is not yet fifty years of age, but on March 15th, she will have been in a nursing home for five years. She feels trapped there and describes her days as being 'monumentally boring'.
She wants out.
'It does seem to me that there is no bridge, no progression system whereby people who would have been inappropriately housed in settings like this would have a means whereby they can re-integrate into society without an enormous amount of effort'.
While people there are very nice, Trish does not fit into the demographic of the nursing home saying that the staff at the nursing home are geared to provide facilities and services for an older population.
Trish wants to get home to reintegrate with her community and return to swimming which would benefit her health enormously, she says. She also feels that while the State contributes to her being there, it is a waste of public money and a waste of her life. Her understanding is that she is not the only one affected by this.
Joe Duffy asked Trish had she any hope of getting out of the nursing home and getting home, to which she replied that there has to be hope.
'Does the State propose to shell out this kind of money on a weekly basis? It is ludicrous'.
Liveline, always a conversation starter for the nation, we expect that this is not the only story of someone in Ireland admitted to a nursing home too soon. Listen back to the item in full here.
