After weeks of Fianna Fáil saying they have no confidence in Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan, TD Michael McGrath yesterday confirmed that one of his party’s first acts if it returns to power would be to sack her.
But as the minority partner in government, with significant concerns about the performance and integrity of the Garda chief, why don't they just pull the plug on their deal with Fine Gael?
The answer, according to Labour Senator Aodhán O’Ríordán on last night's Late Debate, is poll numbers.
"Fianna Fáil are the wiliest operators in Irish politics. They know this game inside out, better than the rest of us put together. They know that with action in the morning, they'll come back with a few more seats..and they'll have to put together an administration pretty similar to the one we have at the moment so why would they want an election now?"
Fianna Fáil's Lisa Chambers insisted her party was not looking at the polls. As you can see from the video, she wasn't convincing anyone at the table.
Also joining Cormac O'hEadhra were Fine Gael TD Alan Farrell, Special Correspondent with The Irish Examiner, Michael Clifford, and Retired Detective Chief Superintendent, John O’Brien.
