Did you have a big crowd at your wedding? That cousin you’ve never met before and your mother’s dentist? One couple who wanted to avoid all the complications of wedding invites got in touch with The Ray D’Arcy Show hoping Ray could help them out with something for their special day. Their request? They wanted to know if Ray could find some volunteers to act as witnesses at their wedding. They said they weren’t telling anybody, not even their families, about the ceremony. Today, Ray spoke to the two listeners – total strangers to the happy couple and each other – who will be taking part in the big day.
Ray described the challenge presented to him and the team as “one of the weirdest” they had attempted over the years. But where there’s a will there’s a way. Listeners Jim and Karen will be showing up at St. Camillus’ Hospital in Limerick on Friday to act as witnesses for the couple and to make sure that getting hitched goes off without a hitch.
Jim told Ray that he’s an old hand at being a witness at this stage:
“I did it [acted as a witness] last year. It was my daughter who was getting married in London… It was very, very special.”
Karen explained that she volunteered to help the couple because she was once in their shoes.
“I had done something similar a few years ago as well, got married and told nobody… I never wanted the big wedding… didn’t want to put anyone out and just said, Look, come on. Let’s do it.”
The generosity didn't end there. Magician Keith Barry was in studio with Ray waiting to be interviewed and he thinks he might go along too.
“I’m in Limerick tomorrow… if I can do it, I will turn up and be part of the ceremony tomorrow.”
