On the 10th of July last year, Stephen Conway received a “devastating” phone call. His father told him that his brother, David, had been in a serious accident on the construction site he had been working on in Australia. He got the next flight he could, believing he could be bringing home his brother’s body on the return flight. Happily, David survived, albeit with serious injuries. Stephen joined Sean O’Rourke to talk about David’s recovery and the process of getting him home.

Stephen told Sean that David had fallen “seven storeys” from some scaffolding.

“I think we just went numb at the time. We didn’t realise what was going to happen or what the seriousness was of the accident.”

Calling it a “miracle” that David survived such a fall, Stephen explained that doctors believe the position in which David landed played a part in him pulling through.

“Unbelievably, he landed on his feet and this is what saved him, in the end…Had he landed on the head or back or anywhere else, there’s no way he would have made it.”
