Electrical Contractors Register call for State regulation "Electrical safety is a political football with each of two government departments claiming it's the other's responsibility", according to David McLaughlin, General Manager of the Register of Electrical Contractors of Ireland. Latest government figures show that in 1996, there were 476 fires caused by faulty electrical wiring and over the last decade there at least 27 deaths as a consequence of faulty installations.
