Nepalese royal deaths spark widespread unrest
The Central Asian kingdom of Nepal has its third king in as many days on the throne. The former King Birendra was thought of as a god by many of his people. He is believed to have died, along with seven others from the Royal family, when Crown Prince Dipendra gunned them all down, before taking his own life. The killings have been variously ascribed to an accident, a row over the Crown prince's wedding plans, or a plot by the new King Gyanedra to secure the throne for himself. The new King has announced an independent enquiry into the massacre, to try to assuage public anger.
