Residents of French town evacuated due to fears over WW1 weapons
Over the Easter weekend, the French Army evacuated 12,000 residents of the town of Vimy saying that a first World War chemical weapons dump there was now a serious risk. The dump contains 160 tonnes of shells as well as phosgene and mustard gas-the Army have built a defensive wall around the compound while anxious residents wait in hotels and holiday camps. Donovan Webster is the author of 'Aftermath-The Remnants of War' which details the deadly toxic and explosive legacy of the battlefields of the 20th Century, especially those of the First World War in France.
