Controversy over Turf Club-Horseracing Authority merger
This morning, a cross section of the Irish horse racing industry will march on the headquarters of the Turf Club, in protest at its opposition to a new single body to run the sport. The Government has proposed merging the Turf Club with the Horseracing Authority to create a new body called Horse Racing Ireland. The Turf Club claims the merger could undermine the integrity of the sport; others say their refusal to co-operate could lose horseracing a substantial increase in funding, with a new unitary body receiving the lion's share of the tax on off-course betting.
