Taoiseach backs call for inquiry into Robert Hamill’s death
It is three years since Robert Hamill was beaten to death in Portadown, a young catholic man attacked by a loyalist gang, and his family has always claimed that RUC officers nearby witnessed the attack but failed to intervene. One man was jailed for causing an affray that night, but the four RUC officers have not been prosecuted, and the Belfast coroner decided no inquest was called for. The Hamill family continues to demand an enquiry into Robert's death. His sister, Diane, met the Taoiseach yesterday, and Bertie Ahern backed their call for an enquiry.
