To mark the bicentenary of Charles Dickens' birth, throughout the month of September 'The Book on One' features an archive recording of 'Hard Times', read by the late Conor Farrington.
Set in the fictional Coketown, the novel centres on the fortunes of Louisa and Tom Gradgrind, the children of a strict schoolteacher who believes that 'facts alone' are all that is needed in life.
First published in 1854, Dickens' tenth novel, his shortest, explores the social and economic pressures of life in a 19th century industrial town.
This recording of 'Hard Times', which was produced by Aidan Mathews, was first broadcast in 1991.
