Sublimer Wishes Episode 2
Claire Cunningham presents the second episode in the occasional series Sublimer Wishes, telling the stories of three poets whose work has been rediscovered. Drogheda poet and winner of the Kavanagh Award, Angela Greene is remembered by her daughter Miriam and fellow poet Susan Connolly. Bernadette Gallagher talks about Dorothea Herbert who was born the daughter of a parson in Georgian era Carrick-on-Suir. Her poetry both light and serious gives insight into the lives of women in the lower gentry at the time. Carol Baraniuk tells us about Florence Mary Wilson, born in County Antrim in 1874. She published one collection, The Coming of the Earls, with poems on themes from celtic myth to history, and we also hear her use of lively Ulster Scots language and expressions in readings by actor Eleanor Methven. The work of all three poets features in Irish Women Poets Rediscovered edited by Maria Johnston and Connor Linnie, published in 2021 by Cork University Press.
