This October, RTÉ lyric fm, once again, celebrates Black History Month across the station. As an ode to the remarkable legacy of Black composers, conductors and performers – we tell their stories, highlighting their unique musical gifts. Every day this month, you will hear prominent musical figures honouring the lives of Black musicians who are often under-represented in the world of music.
In its third year, RTÉ lyric fm's Black History Month series shares the remarkable legacies of Black musicians, told by artists such as Danielle De Niese, Braimah Kanneh-Mason, Eímear Noone and Zoe Conway.
The series, devised and produced by Saibh Downes and Peter Curtin, was prompted by the lack of representation in classical music - from the classroom to the concert hall. On the project, creator Saibh Downes says: "As a kid of colour who grew up in the world of classical music, I never knew of composers, conductors or musicians who look like I do. Representation is everything. I can’t wait to see (and hear) what we do next."
