Bernard Clarke is a broadcaster, working on The Blue of the Night. He was raised on two musical diets: a strict Bach, Beethoven, Mozart one from his father; and Bill Hailey, Elvis Presley, and the early Beatles from his mother. So, blame them.
As a teenager he discovered Jimi Hendrix and Rory Gallagher. Both great guitarists opened the world of the Blues for him -the electric one through Hendrix; the acoustic one through Gallagher. Led Zeppelin and the Doors also proved to be cardinal influences. Such a gumbo was not in keeping with academia and that mixed with large doses of Poetry put paid to any career beyond the menial.
A stint in Tower Records followed, then HMV and then RTÉ lyric fm. The first library drawers he opened in Lyric were the sound effects selections and the electro-acoustic and sound art collections.
That hasn't changed. He’s just even more curious now. He doesn’t do anything except listen and imitate in his spare time; and he occasionally meets friends for a drink. He hates photographs, so the world of the mole making noises in the dark on the wireless suits him just fine.
