MOVIES AND MUSICALS WITH AEDÍN GORMLEY
Irish film director, producer, screenwriter, composer, and musician John Carney's films are known to have a strong music theme, most notably Once, Begin Again and Sing Street. Ahead of his latest film Power Ballad opening in cinemas, Aedín chats with the director and leading actor Paul Rudd about this new release that was filmed in Ireland. It sees Paul Rudd playing a past-his-prime wedding singer who crosses paths with Danny (Nick Jonas), a fading boyband star, during a gig. This chance encounter upends both their lives in very different ways.

VOX NOSTRA WITH VLAD SMISHKEWYCH
Courts, chapels and salons across Europe provide the setting for this Sunday's Vox Nostra. Vlad explores sacred polyphony from the German composer Melchior Franck, whose expressive writing stands at the threshold of the Baroque. Our Sunday Sonata brings elegant instrumental music from Georg Muffat, whose cosmopolitan style blends French and Italian influences, while the Morning Madrigal turns to the richly lyrical Venetian vocal world of Giovanni Legrenzi. Along the way, echoes of earlier courtly song appear in music linked to the troubadour Thibaud IV of Champagne, tracing a path from medieval poetry to the refined instrumental traditions of the later Baroque.
