OPERA NIGHT WITH PAUL HERRIOTT

Metropolitan Opera New York presents Werther by Massenet

Tonight's performance was selected from the Met Archives by Lawrence Brownlee. The 1979 performance of 'Werther' at the Metropolitan Opera is a testament to Alfredo Kraus's exceptional talent as a tenor. His portrayal of the title role, 'Werther', is celebrated for its depth, truth, and aristocratic bearing. The opera, composed by Jules Massenet, is based on Goethe's novel and is known for its emotional intensity and dramatic impact. The performance at the Metropolitan Opera featured Richard Bonynge conducting, and the cast included Kathleen Battle as Sophie and Lenus Carlson as Albert. The opera's music, conducted by Richard Bonynge, was described as exquisitely textured, occasionally blanketing the singers but emerging with profound feeling for the score. This performance remains a significant contribution to the opera's history and is a must-listen for opera enthusiasts.

VOX NOSTRA WITH VLAD SMISHKEWYCH

The trumpet is an instrument equally at home in every century - in fact, we have evidence of ancient trumpets going back thousands of years! But the instrument had its heyday in the Baroque period, and today we'll get to enjoy a real cornucopia of trumpet treats, with a special nod to Italian composer and violinist Giuseppe Torelli, who died this day in 1709. Although his catalogue is certainly not lacking in works for violin, he had a special place reserved for the trumpet, dedicating several of his concerti, concertini, and sinfonie to this instrument. We'll hear some of these alongside other versions of the early, unvalved trumpet, though an excursion into the more modern lands of the early valved trumpet might be in the offing.

The Mirror Lamp Press Radio Edition

What does a magazine sound like? The Mirror Lamp Press magazine showcasing work by Irish and international writers and artists usually exists in words and pictures. But for this edition, the artists have all created radio artwork. In To Olivia, Marian Balfe sends a letter to the overlooked Guinness matriarch, Olivia Whitmore Guinness; Niamh Moriarty & Ruth Clinton's The Sorriest remixes the public apology; Jay Bernard's A Tardiness in Nature traces a kinship of the personal and the historical; Basil Al Rawi's The Image recalls the hold of images of the Gulf War on his younger self;

and Lisa Freeman's radio poem, Piggy features a performance by actor, Pattie Maguire. In this programme, Mirror Lamp Press editors Gwen Burlington and Eoghan MacIntyre listen to and discuss the works with Culture File's Luke Clancy.

Presenter: Luke Clancy

The programme is a co-production of The Lyric Feature, The Mirror Lamp Press and Soundsdoable.

THE FULL SCORE WITH LIZ NOLAN

Deirdre McKay's Meltwater evokes the fragile beauty of ice slowly melting, an emotional reflection on water in a time of climate change. With subtle, shimmering textures, it captures both the wonder of nature and the quiet urgency of a warming world. In contrast, Handel's Water Music offers a lively dance-driven celebration of nature's beauty drawing on historical grandeur and dance rhythms, for performance on the Thames. It's music that dances, dazzles, and delights.
