OPERA NIGHT WITH PAUL HERRIOTT

Metropolitan Opera New York presents Gershwin's Porgy and Bess

Bass-baritone Alfred Walker and soprano Brittany Renee headline one of the defining works of American music theatre. With its fusion of opera, jazz, and Broadway, the Gershwins' enduring masterpiece features a number of tunes whose popularity has transcended the opera house, including the classics 'Summertime' and 'It Ain't Necessarily So.' VESPERTINE WITH ELLEN CRANITCH

The tuba doesn't immediately spring to mind when talking jazz, but in the hands of Daniel Herskedal it has taken its place as an instrument of enormous versatility and lyrical expression. He visited Ireland on a Music Network tour last autumn, and RTÉ lyric fm was in the Pavilion in Dún Laoghaire to record his trio in an extraordinary night of music. Ellen also chatted to him about his unique path through his art, his herd of reindeer, and the importance of the natural world in his artistic journey. Hear concert highlights and interview this Saturday on Vespertine.

VOX NOSTRA WITH VLAD SMISHKEWYCH

Paul Hofhaymer was known during his time as one of the top organists of Europe, and for no small reason: in addition to being unrivalled at improvisation and composition, he was also Imperial Organist of Maximilian I, making him the leading Hapsburg organist and musician. Along with that of Heinrich Isaac, Hofhaymer was a household name among the cultured houses of Europe in the 15th century. Born this day in 1459, Hofhaymer left a legacy of keyboard and polyphonic music that paints a colourful picture of the musical world of the Hapsburgs, and we'll explore his oeuvre on this morning's Vox Nostra, alongside the music of his contemporary Isaac.

THE FULL SCORE WITH LIZ NOLAN

Mozart, too often reduced to a simplistic image of a child prodigy or eccentric genius, remains a true musical phenomenon - both surprising and essential. While the myths surrounding him persist, only his music allows us to approach him with real understanding.

Our Full Score concert today traces several stages of his life: Salzburg, with its refined youthful works; Prague, where the majestic Symphony No. 38 was born; and Vienna in 1791, the final year of his life, marked by an astonishing burst of creativity that produced The Magic Flute, the Clarinet Concerto, and the unfinished Requiem. Liz Nolan presents a showcase of unabridged musical masterworks, featuring live recordings of Irish and international performers, plus selections from the latest CD releases.
