OPERA NIGHT WITH PAUL HERRIOTT

Metropolitan Opera New York presents Bellini's I Puritani

For gorgeous melody, spellbinding coloratura, and virtuoso vocal fireworks, I Puritani has few equals. The Met has assembled a quartet of stars, conducted by Marco Armiliato, for the demanding principal roles. Soprano Lisette Oropesa and tenor Lawrence Brownlee are Elvira and Arturo, brought together by love and torn apart by the political rifts of the English Civil War, with baritone Artur Rucinski as Riccardo, betrothed to Elvira against her will, and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as Elvira's sympathetic uncle, Giorgio.

THE LYRIC FEATURE

Among the Heather Rocks

Poet Annemarie Ní Churreáin goes back to the Donegal Gaeltacht, where she grew up, and explores the folklore and history, landscape, language and personal experiences that all influenced her poetry.

She meets historian Brian Lacey to hear more about the local myth of Balor and the Poison Glen, talks with Lucy Ní hAodhagáin of Wild Awake about reconnecting with nature and our past, views workhouse documents with Donegal County Archivist Niamh Brennan, and takes part in Ireland's only Irish-language Pride parade, Bród na Gaeltachta, before speaking with its founder, Pól Penrose. Throughout the programme we hear poems by Annemarie from her collections Bloodroot (Doire Press), The Poison Glen (The Gallery Press) and Ghostgirl, published as part of the Donegal Decade of Centenaries programme.

Music in the opening sequence of the programme, Difference in Clouds, was composed by Michael Gallen and performed by the Prima Quartet.

Produced by Claire Cunningham

THE FULL SCORE WITH LIZ NOLAN

Three leading figures on the international music scene-violinist Lisa Batiashvili, cellist Gautier Capuçon and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet-perform in our Full Score concert, which spans a century of chamber music. Shostakovich's Trio No. 1, written when the composer was just sixteen, is followed by another early masterpiece, Debussy's Trio in G major. The journey concludes with Dvořák's Trio No. 3, a work that epitomizes the composer's dual allegiance: on one side, the influence of the Classical-Romantic tradition; on the other, his deep connection to folk music and song. Liz Nolan presents a showcase of unabridged musical masterworks, featuring live recordings of Irish and international performers, plus selections from the latest CD releases.
