OPERA NIGHT WITH PAUL HERRIOTT

Mozart's La clemenza di Tito with Tara Erraught

Love, betrayal and political intrigue ignite Mozart's final opera. Step into ancient Rome with Mozart's La clemenza di Tito. Vitellia, sung by Tara Erraught, daughter of a former emperor, seeks to regain the throne as Emperor Tito's wife. When Tito, sung by Giovanni Sala chooses another bride, she schemes her way through the Roman Empire, manipulating Tito's closest ally into attempting assassination. What follows is a web of guilt, betrayal and confessions, leading to the ultimate test of mercy and forgiveness. Written in the year of the composer's death, La clemenza di Tito is loosely inspired by the life of the first-century Roman Emperor, Titus. Mozart's dramatic score sets a tale of political intrigue and personal jealousy alight. Maxim Emelyanychev conducts the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Chorus in tonight's production recorded at the Edinburgh International Festival 2025.

Dead Reeds

Without its reeds, the Uilleann pipes make no music. Pipers Paddi Benson and Grace Lemon explore stories bound up in the instrument's reeds, including those that no longer play.

Pipers are at the mercy of their reeds - a reed might sing beautifully until caught by sudden failure or gradual withering. In acknowledging their fragility, Paddi and Grace expose personal stories of life and death. They retrace the lifecycles of reeds - from their birth as cane to their uncertain existence in the hands of harvesters, makers and players - uncovering stories of connectivity, migration and memory, from earth to sound.

The narrative is interwoven with original music and interviews from pipers Mick O'Brien, Máire Ni Ghráda, Bill Haneman as well interviews with musicians, reed makers and cane harvesters.

Produced by Niamh O'Brien
Presented by Paddi Benson and Grace Lemon.

THE FULL SCORE WITH LIZ NOLAN

Today's Full Score concert celebrates youth-of both performers and composers. At just 25 years old, Finnish conductor Tarmo Peltokoski is already captivating audiences and orchestras alike. Appointed Music Director of the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse last year, he brings both brilliance and freshness to the podium.

Peltokoski's passion for orchestral music was first sparked when he discovered Wagner on YouTube-an origin story that feels fitting for a conductor of his generation. Among his artistic heroes is Gustav Mahler, who composed his Symphony No. 1 at the youthful age of 28 - a work we'll hear in today's performance. Liz Nolan presents a showcase of unabridged musical masterworks, featuring live recordings of Irish and international performers, plus selections from the latest CD releases.
