OPERA NIGHT WITH PAUL HERRIOTT
Wexford Festival Opera 2025: Handel's Deidamia
Live from the National Opera House in Wexford Paul Herriott brings us a production of Handel's Deidamia. Achilles (sung by Bruno de Sá), disguised as a young girl named Pyrrha, is hidden on the island of Skyros to avoid being sent to the Trojan War. There, he falls in love with Deidamia (sung by Sophie Junker), daughter of King Lycomedes (sung by Petros Magoulas). Their secret romance is threatened when Ulysses (sung by Nicolò Balducci) and the Greeks arrive, determined to find Achilles. Ulysses exposes his true identity by tempting him with weapons. Though torn between love and destiny, Achilles chooses glory, leaving Deidamia heartbroken. Blending comedy and drama, Handel's Deidamia explores love, deception, and fate in a world where duty triumphs over personal desire. George Petrou conducts the Wexford Festival Opera Orchestra and Chorus in tonight's production.

VOX NOSTRA WITH VLAD SMISHKEWYCH
Who is Anne Onymous, anyway? Vlad further explores the intersection of European and African-Diaspora music and musicians with a look at the many contributions to the courtly and clerical music life of the medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods by taking a deeper look at who made and wrote music under the terms 'anonymous', how certain names given or taken hid the achievements of minority musicians in plain sight, and what artworks of old can tell us about who was in musical positions of performance and creation.

THE LYRIC FEATURE
The Musician That Is Me
US-born composer Jane O'Leary, who is a recipient this month of a lifetime achievement award from the National Concert Hall, has lived in Ireland since 1972 and has made an immeasurable contribution to contemporary Irish classical music, looks back on her career. As a young child, she longed to play the piano, later going on study at Vassar College, where she was introduced to composition, and Princeton, where she developed her skills as a composer and met her Irish husband.
When she moved to Ireland in 1972, no one was playing contemporary music on a regular basis and women composers were practically unheard of. Jane set about changing that, and among her many achievements is founding Ireland's first contemporary music group, the Concorde Ensemble. She is
also a driving force behind Music for Galway where her work led to the appointment of the ConTempo Quartet as Galway Music Ensemble in Residence. We hear from musicians in both those ensembles about working with Jane and performing her music. We also get a glimpse at the composer at work with pianists Maria Sumareva and Andrew Rosenblum, who have commissioned her to write a piece for them. We also hear from Judith Ring, who has admired Jane's work since she first heard it and is grateful to Jane for the work she has done to promote and encourage younger composers.
Produced by Claire Cunningham (Rockfinch Ltd) and funded by Coimisiún na Meán and the RTÉ Independent Radio Productions Unit from the Television Licence Fee.
