OPERA NIGHT WITH PAUL HERRIOTT
Paul Herriot brings us the award-winning Baroque dynamos Peter Whelan and the Irish Baroque Orchestra who made their Proms debut last month with a Handel rarity that celebrates the power of music itself. Alexander's Feast is an oratorio of operatic intensity, setting John Dryden's poem about the musician Timotheus, who stirs Alexander the Great to destructive revenge. The work was heard in the three-part version the composer made for performances in Dublin in 1742 and was performed by soprano Hilary Cronin, counter-tenor Hugh Cutting, tenor Stuart Jackson with Peter Whelan conducting the Irish Baroque Orchestra and Chorus.

VOX NOSTRA WITH VLAD SMISHKEWYCH
Praise-songs are a unique genre that span times, places, and cultures. From elegies and cantigas in the medieval West, to the epic lays of Eastern Europe and Asia, to the Griot and royal storytellers of Africa, we have stunning examples of songs praising the human and the divine on this Sunday's Vox Nostra. Music by the French sacred troubadour Gautier de Coincy kicks off this celebration of laud, with his uniquely beautiful chansons of the 'Miracles de Nostre Dame' in the 13th century. Plus: new recordings from the summer of 2025 in review, and Vlad looks forward to the Sligo Baroque Music Festival as the autumn Early Music festival season kicks off.
