OPERA NIGHT WITH PAUL HERRIOTT

Irish National Opera presents Gounod's Faust

Going back in time and doing it over differently is one of the oldest fantasies in the book. In this opera the elderly philosopher Faust sung by Duke Kim gets just that chance, and in the twinkling of a devilish eye he is young, handsome, and smitten with the lovely Marguerite (sung by Jennifer Davis). Of course the devil always gets his due, and in the end, Méphistophélès, here portrayed by Nicholas Brownlee, wins Faust's immortal soul. Gyula Nagy is Marguerite's unfortunate brother, Valentin, who sings one of the best-known tunes in all of opera. Elaine Kelly conducts the Irish National Opera Orchestra and Chorus.

VESPERTINE WITH ELLEN CRANITCH

Today we celebrate International Day Of The World's Indigenous Peoples, with music and song from Bolivia, Peru, India, New Zealand, Canada and more. Highlighting the often intense connection that exists between humans and the environment in remote locations, we dip into the language, culture and musical traditions of remote peoples which are in danger of being lost forever through the multiple threats from mining, agriculture, tourism and the depletion of natural resources.

VOX NOSTRA WITH VLAD SMISHKEWYCH

Just in time for Biber: This Sunday on Vox Nostra, an exploration of one of the composers who is moderately well-known to audiences today, thanks to his exquisite sonatas for violin. Less known, perhaps, are his large-scale works, and we'll get to hear several of those magnificent oeuvres, especially one of the extravagantly-orchestrated masses which he wrote for the cathedral in Salzburg. For no fewer than 53-parts, it is perhaps the largest-scale Baroque work on record, comparable to Tallis' 'Spem in Alium' or Mahler's 8th, the 'Symphony of a Thousand'. But we'll also enjoy his smaller-scale works, and of course, the Sunday Sonata returns in August with the gorgeousness of Biber's best-known violin works, the Rosary Sonatas.
