OPERA NIGHT WITH PAUL HERRIOTT

The Metropolitan Opera New York's Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition is a US wide programme designed to discover promising young opera singers and assist in their artistic and professional development. Each season, more than 1,400 applicants participate in a series of auditions leading up to the Grand Finals Concert, featuring the Met Orchestra, this year conducted by Karen Kamensek, in which a small group of finalists compete for cash prizes and the chance to launch a major operatic career. Since the programme's inauguration more than 70 years ago, the competition has discovered generations of star singers, including Jessye Norman, Frederica von Stade, Renée Fleming, Thomas Hampson, Denyce Graves, Stephanie Blythe, Sondra Radvanovsky, Lawrence Brownlee, Lisette Oropesa, Jamie Barton, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Nadine Sierra, and Ryan Speedo Green.

VOX NOSTRA WITH VLAD SMISHKEWYCH

We cap off this week's journey a day ahead of Bastille Day, listening to music around the time of the French Revolution and tied to this date in 1789, when events were set in motion that led to the storming of the infamous prison-fortress. Vox Nostra also explores music by Juan del Encina and other gems from the Spanish Renaissance villancicos. From Revolutions, to Reformation, to Counter-Reformation, Vox Nostra follows events of yesteryear and provides a music backdrop for many of the events we read about in the history books.

THE LYRIC FEATURE

Music, Romanticism & the Sublime

Virtuosity, Performing the Impossible 2

Sometime between the 1780s and the 1820s something changed forever in European culture and nowhere was this more apparent than in music. It was now possible to imagine that music itself could express ideas, and help people understand-or at least experience-something of the world around them. In this series, Michael Lee explores the changing world of music in the Romantic Era and its transcendent ideal: the sublime. Whether recreating the noise of revolution, challenging performers to new heights of virtuosity, or exploring the inner world of the imagination, music would never be the same again. Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn

Programme 2: Balancing the demands of virtuosity and poetry, Niccolo Paganini, Clara Schumann, Franz Liszt.

Presenter: Michael Lee

THE FULL SCORE WITH LIZ NOLAN

Our Full Score Concert comes from Music for Galway's midwinter celebration of Ravel last January and presents early works of Ravel, starting with some simple piano works written as homages to other composers and finishing with one of his most punishing works, the famed Gaspard de la Nuit inspired by poetry by Aloysius Bertrand. In between we hear some early songs and one of Ravel's most popular works, the Mother Goose Suite, for piano duet. Liz Nolan presents a showcase of unabridged musical masterworks, featuring live recordings of Irish and international performers, plus selections from the latest CD releases.
