VOX NOSTRA WITH VLAD SMISHKEWYCH

Palestrina, how fair thou art! A gorgeous sentiment, and the title of a CD by the King's Singers, and also the connecting thread that winds through this morning's Vox Nostra. Vlad brings to the fore all things Palestrina: sacred music and secular, instrumental explorations and improvisations, and of course, the amazing polyphony which made Palestrina so renowned in his time and in ours. Recordings by The Sixteen, The Tallis Scholars, Hilliard Ensemble, and many others will bring this monumental composer to life on the eve of the 500th anniversary of his birth.

THE LYRIC FEATURE

Where the River Rises

The poet Jane Clarke has been living in County Wicklow for around thirty years. In that time, she has grown to know and love the Avonmore River. In Where the River Rises Jane walks the banks of the river in the company of naturalists and historians and teases out the story of the river's past and its possible futures through conversation, observation and reflection in poetry. Contributors include naturalist Richard Nairn, conservationist Hugh McLindon, ecologist Faith Wilson, archaeologist Chris Corlett and Jean Costelloe former curator of the Avondale House and Estate. Throughout the programme Jane reads poems which celebrate the nature of the Avonmore River, describe its fragility, and celebrate efforts being made to protect and restore it.

Where the River Rises is a Rockfinch production funded by Coimisiún na Meán's Sound and Vision Broadcasting funding scheme and by RTÉ with the Television Licence Fee.
