MOVIES AND MUSICALS WITH AEDÍN GORMLEY
A special broadcast today from Cork, celebrating the 69th Cork International Film Festival, recognising the best in home-grown and international cinema. Aedín will chat with a great selection of the filmmakers taking part, including Cork native John Crowley, who will be in attendance with the Irish premiere of his acclaimed new film We Live in Time, starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, and we'll have fantastic live music throughout the show.
At 15:30 we'll take an immersive dive into the life and music of one of the greatest film music composers of all time: Henry Mancini, who was born 100 years ago this year. This programme tells Henry Mancini's story from his early life as the son of Italian immigrants in Pittsburgh where he was first handed a flute by his father, through his years as a musician in the Big Bands, learning the film trade at Universal Pictures, and eventually to composing some of the most recognisable music on film. With recordings of Mancini himself from the BBC Archives, we also hear from his daughter Monica Mancini and son in law Gregg Field, both professional jazz musicians, film historian Jon Burlingame and pianist Tom Poster.

VOX NOSTRA WITH VLAD SMISHKEWYCH
Vlad loves returning to science as an inspiration for Vox Nostra and since we're at the start of Science Week, it's a perfect way to bring these two excellent themes together. We'll get to hear the many instruments across a millennium and more of music history that were made possible thanks to innovations in science and technology. We'll also listen to music that describes and celebrates science and mathematics greats, both ancient and (more) modern. Quirky keyboards, brazen and wild brasswinds, scintillating strings - it's a musical celebration of science on Vox Nostra to celebrate Science Week 2024!

THE LYRIC FEATURE
Feather & Flock
Winner of the Gold Award in the Specialist Speech programme category at the 2024 IMRO awards.
Feather and Flock is a six-part series about some of Ireland's most iconic breeding birds. Each episode combines ecology, folklore and music to uncover the incredible lives and journeys of these wild creatures. Presenters Anja Murray and Brían Mac Gloinn hear from biologists, behavioural ecologists, folklorists, a poet, linguistic experts and others in an exploration of each bird and its place in Irish culture. The series is soundtracked with immersive on-location recordings from Brían Mac Gloinn and series collaborator Seán Ronayne of Irish Wildlife Sounds, along with avian themed folk music and original compositions by Brían Mac Gloinn and friends. Episodes 1 to 3 were broadcast earlier this year and are available from the Lyric Feature page of the RTÉ website.
Episode 6: Eagles
Ireland has white tailed sea eagles as well as golden eagles, both having been recently reintroduced. In this episode Anja Murray and Brían Mac Gloinn travel to Garinish Island in West Cork to see a young White-tailed sea Eagle on the nest, being fed fish by its parents, and hear from National Parks and Wildlife Service Ranger Clare Heardman about the nesting and breeding habits of these enormous birds as well as the efforts involved in the reintroduction programme.
The rich cultural associations with Eagles in Irish place names and in folklore are explored with Lorcan O Toole of the Golden Eagle Reintroduction project, where they watch a pair of golden eagles soaring over the mountains of Glenveagh National Park.
We hear music from harper Laoise Kelly, featuring Fead an Iolar (The Eagle's Whistle) a very ancient Irish tune. We also hear a new song from Brían written and performed in collaboration with Ye Vagabonds bandmate Alain McFadden.
