OPERA NIGHT WITH PAUL HERRIOTT
I Capuleti e I Montecchi by Bellini from the Salzburg Festival
Bellini's hauntingly beautiful, liquid melodies abound in his opera, I Capuleti e i Montecchi. After the first performances of this opera the composer himself said 'My style is now heard in the most important theatres in the world...and with the greatest enthusiasm.' In this adaption of the tale of the star-crossed lovers, Bellini gives both the leading roles to female voices, which adds a special eroticism to the love music. In the leading roles this evening we hear soprano Elsa Dreisig as Giulietta and mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina as Romeo. The Vienna Philharmonic Chorus and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg is conducted by Marco Armiliato.
Jon Tolansky presents a concert performance recorded at last year's Salzburg Festival but before that Jon shines a spotlight on one of the leading stars of tonight's production, Aigul Akhmetshina.

VOX NOSTRA WITH VLAD SMISHKEWYCH
Born on this day in 1454, Angelo Ambrogini - known by his toponym, Angelo Poliziano - was one of the principal poet-linguists who brought the classical works of the Ancient Greeks into Italian, which made it possible for composers such as Monteverdi, Caccini, Strozzi, and Landi to write works based on these poems and epic stories. We'll hear some of the works that owe their existence to Poliziano's work, including operas and more than a few madrigals.
