MOVIES AND MUSICALS WITH AEDÍN GORMLEY
Aedín dips into the impressive 2018 London production of Stephen Sondheim's musical Company. This newly revised gender-swapped version saw the lead Bobby, played by a woman as opposed to a man, an excellent Rosalie Craig joined by a very fine cast that included Patti LuPone. Great scores by Thomas Newman from The Shawshank Redemption and Wall-E. Classic film music from Hitchcock's Spellbound and the on-screen chemistry is strong between Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in The Big Sleep scored by Max Steiner.

VOX NOSTRA WITH VLAD SMISHKEWYCH
Karl Friedrich Abel, the 17th-century German wunderkind of the viola da gamba, takes centre-stage on this Sunday's Vox Nostra, with his music played by soloists on this distinguished instrument as well as chamber ensembles and perhaps a Symphony to liven up the mix. The intriguing history of Mr Abel includes his enduring friendship with the youngest of the Bach sons, Johann Christian, who joined the gambist in London in terms 1762. From their time together in England's capital was born a series of subscription concerts--England's first--known as the Bach-Abel concerts. We'll get to hear some of the works that premiered in that heady environment, as well as trio sonatas, quartets, and more. The young Mozart even pops up in our story, thanks to a work by Abel misattributed to a youthful Wolfgang. All this and more, on this Sunday morning's Vox Nostra.

THE LYRIC FEATURE
'Maggie from Mayo' - The life of the Irish soprano Margaret Burke Sheridan
"You cannot speak of Puccini from an international point of view without reference to Margherita Sheridan who in my opinion...is one of the greatest interpreters of Puccini's work."
~ Dott. Giorgio Gualerzi, Milan 1989
In this the 100th anniversary year of the death of the famous Italian composer this documentary pays tribute to Margaret Burke Sheridan who, as Puccini's daughter revealed, considered this Irish diva 'the outstanding Butterfly of all time'. Margaret Burke-Sheridan was born in 1889 and died in April 1958. From Castlebar in Co Mayo, Ireland, Margaret was known as 'Maggie from Mayo'.
'Discovered' by Guglielmo Marconi while singing at a fashionable soirée in London, the famous inventor subsequently brought Sheridan to Italy, to pursue her dream of becoming an opera singer. For twelve years Margaret performed at La Scala and Covent Garden where she enthralled the opera-goers. When she played the part of Madame Butterfly, Puccini was spellbound.
The bronze bust statue, which now adorns a stairway wall in the National Concert Hall in Dublin, was presented to her by the San Carlo Opera House in Naples in 1921 and bears the inscription 'A Margherita Sheridan, Butterfly Insuperabile.'
Maggie from Mayo was written and presented by Anne Chambers and the producer was Michael O Kane.
This is an updated version of the original documentary which aired in January 2006

VESPERTINE WITH ELLEN CRANITCH
For a country roughly the size of Ireland but with a population of just under 400 thousand people, Iceland has produced a huge amount of really world class music. There's the biggies, Sigur Ros and Bjork, but so much more besides - the classically influenced Vikingur Olafson, Gabriel Olafs, Olafur Arnalds, film composers Hildur Guonadottir and Johann Johannson, and the folk-leaning quartet Amiina. I'll also dive into the beautiful 'Rimur', folk hymn tradition, which inspired the album of the same name by Trio Medieval. On the eve of Iceland's National day, celebrate the spectacular eruption of fine music from this little volcanic isle.
