THE LYRIC FEATURE

Imogen Stuart and Michael Coady

The sculptor Imogen Stuart and the poet Michael Coady died within a day of each other on the 24th and 25th of March this year. Each is remembered with a programme from the RTÉ archive in this evening's Lyric Feature.

We begin with John Quinn's 2001 programme Three Men Standing at the Met where we find the writer Michael Coady listening to a broadcast of Verdi's La Forza del Destino from the Metropolitan Opera in New York in his home in Carrick on Suir, Co. Waterford and reflecting on a November night in 1927 when his father and two uncles attended the same opera at the Met. Reconstructed in part from the émigrés letters and using Verdi's music as counterpoint the programme brings the real lived experience of emigration in the 1920s with a refreshing and engaging specificity.

Following this a 2002 episode from the Invisible Thread in which Theo Dorgan interviewed Imogen Stuart about her life and work. The artist speaks about her upbringing in Weimar Germany and how she coped as a teenager during the Second World War and of her marriage to Maud Gonne's grandson Ian Stuart which led to her relocation to Ireland where her works and their signature expressionist style are essential to the story of contemporary Irish art.
