VOX NOSTRA WITH VLAD SMISHKEWYCH

Today Vlad digs into a new CD from the Fieri Consort featuring music by two of Italy's greatest composers: Maddalena Casulana and Barbara Strozzi. There's nothing quite as exciting for performers as knowing they are the first to do something, and whilst the Fieri Consort are already known for their excellent performances of Strozzi's music, their recording of Casulana's madrigals is truly groundbreaking. She was the first female composer in western music to have had a book of her works printed, however until the recent discovery by Professor Laurie Stras of her lost 'Book 1 of Madrigals for 5 Voices', the full sound of her music had not been heard for over 400 years. The Fieri Consort, one of today's most exciting vocal ensembles, reveals how cutting-edge Casulana was in her time, and today we'll hear some of Europe's finest musicians celebrate these two 17th Century composers' skill, with both words and music.

THE LYRIC FEATURE

For the Record

Laoise O'Brien has spent the past twenty-five years championing an instrument often unfairly perceived as an instrument of torture, the recorder. The particular sonority of a mass of small plastic recorders has left an unfortunate legacy on an instrument once known as the 'sweet flute'. Join Laoise as she embarks on a journey to tell the story of the recorder and its development during the ages, featuring recordings of popular pieces from the repertoire including Greensleeves, J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 and Three Blinde Mice as it was originally composed. Part historical account, part personal voyage, Laoise will introduce us to the various sizes and styles of recorder, the vast amount of repertoire spanning a millennium, and the many different uses for which the instrument was employed: from dances on the village green, to music composed by kings.

RTÉ LYRIC LIVE WITH PAUL HERRIOTT

The RTÉ Concert Orchestra brings us an evening of glorious masterpieces. The exhilarating colour of Berlioz's Roman Carnival Overture is perfect for a May evening. Then for Gershwin's thrilling F major piano concerto, fusing the worlds of classical, jazz and musical theatre, we welcome to centre stage leading Irish pianist Michael McHale. A favourite among the late Romantic symphonies, Sibelius's 5th Symphony has the lot - evocative, shimmering strings, a French horn theme that has been likened to the sun parting clouds and a sweeping, swelling, irresistibly stirring finale. Paul Herriott brings us this evening of entertainment by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra under Kensho Watanabe, one of the most exciting young conductors to come out of the United States.
