OPERA NIGHT WITH PAUL HERRIOTT
Wexford Festival Opera 2024 presents Donizetti's Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali
Paul Herriott brings us Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali (Conventions and Inconveniences of the Stage) a two-act farce that shines an exaggerated spotlight on the behind-the-scenes working of a theatre and the rehearsal process, showing what can go wrong when the egos of the performers get in the way of putting on a good show. A regional (and mediocre) operatic troupe is rehearsing a new work and faces numerous obstacles. The prima donna acts every bit the diva, refusing to rehearse. The tenor finds himself in the wrong production and quite out of his depth. The Seconda Donna's mother (played by a baritone) demands that her daughter be given a more prominent role, before deciding to take on several roles herself. Not be outshone, the Prima Donna's husband takes to the stage too. When the show eventually collapses and the company tries to flee under cover of night, rather than pay back all the investors (whose money has already been spent), the Impresario has other plans... Danila Grassi conducts the Wexford Festival Opera Orchestra and Chorus.

THE LYRIC FEATURE
Feather & Flock
Winner of the Gold Award in the Specialist Speech programme category at the 2024 IMRO awards.
Feather and Flock is a six-part series about some of Ireland's most iconic breeding birds. Each episode combines ecology, folklore and music to uncover the incredible lives and journeys of these wild creatures. Presenters Anja Murray and Brían Mc Gloinn hear from biologists, behavioural ecologists, folklorists, a poet, linguistic experts and others in an exploration of each bird and its place in Irish culture. The series is soundtracked with immersive on-location recordings from Brían Mac Gloinn and series collaborator Seán Ronayne of Irish Wildlife Sounds, along with avian themed folk music and original compositions by Brían Mac Gloinn and friends. Episodes 1 to 3 were broadcast earlier this year and are available from the Lyric Feature page of the RTÉ website.
Episode 4: Skylark
Skylark is a charismatic bird of open ground and the uplands, widely celebrated for their impressive singing ability. In this episode, ecologist Anja Murray and musician Brían Mac Gloinn begin with the Skylarks' fame in poetry, with poet Martin Dyar. The pair also get an insight into the fascinating science of birdsong with John Quinn, behavioural ecologist in UCC, and the physiology that allows these birds to produce such an impressive range of sounds and complexity of song. To compare the way songbirds and traditional singers learn their songs, we hear from Tríona Ní Shíocháin of NUIG about creative transmission and the Irish singing tradition. The role of Skylark in traditional songs and folklore is discussed with Ríonach Uí Ógáin, former director of the National Folklore Collection.
A team of musical collaborators feature in this episode too: The Lark in the Morning is sung by Brían & Diarmuid Mac Gloinn; tunes by uilleann piper Emmett Gill; and Brían also premieres a new song written especially for this episode.

She received an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection in 1996 and had been nominated for both Grammy and BRIT awards. VESPERTINE WITH ELLEN CRANITCH
The first day of Samhain - the season of drawing close to the fire, sharing stories and songs, and tucking in for the long winter nights. Fraser Fifield's new album 'One Great Circle’ is inspired by the Aberdeen-born storyteller, piper, ballad singer, author and member of a prominent traveller family, Stanley Robertson. His way of speaking, the imagery he evokes, and his thoughts on re-incarnation inspired this considered album and informed its title. We hear the beguiling music and meet Fraser who explains its creation and the close connection he feels with Stanley, though they never met.
