Story Notes
In 1945, at the end of the Second World War, Dr Robert Collis, then head paediatrician at the Rotunda Hospital, travelled to Holland on a humanitarian mission with The Red Cross. There he led a covey of professionals to the newly liberated Belsen concentration camp. He set up a makeshift children's hospital and began the long process of reuniting children with their families.
There were only five children for whom no home or family could be found so Dr Collis decided that they would accompany him back to Ireland. The children were adopted by Jewish families and two of them, Zoltan and Edit, went to live with the Collis family.
As adults, they talk about how they survived this "Horror Camp" and adapted to their new life in Ireland.
Produced by Helen MacInerney
First broadcast on the 27th of October, 1993.
