‘The Catholic Gentry’ is a documentary on Moore family of Mooresfort, Co Tipperary – one of the most important and fascinating families who moved from Antrim to Tipperary ended up owning a huge tract of land in the area and playing a huge role in the history of the family.
The family originally purchased the Mooresfort estate in county Tipperary around 1850. Arthur John Moore was created a Papal Count in 1879 and he went on to found the Mount St Joseph Cistercian Abbey in county Offaly. In twenty years the Moore’s of Mooresfort owned over 10,699 acres in the county.
This documentary was originally part of the ‘Behind the Closed Eye’ series.
