Story Notes
1976 marked fifty years since the beginnning of a broadcasting service in Ireland.
On the 9th January 1926, listeners to this new service heard the first sports broadcasting when the announcer listed the twelve men who would make up the Irish rugby team who were to play France the following day. Incidentally, the Irish beat the France 11-0 in that game.
Marking fifty years of sports broadcasting, this documentary from our archives takes an affectionate look back at the art of sports broadcasting over the previous fifty years.
Featuring Roibeard O' Farachain, Jimmy Mahon, Micheal O'Hehir and Gus Ingolsby.
Presented by Philip Greene.
Produced by Dermot kelly.
