Story Notes
The National Gallery of Ireland was founded in 1854 and opened its doors ten years later.
The Gallery houses an extensive collection of Irish paintings and is also notable for its Italian Baroque and Dutch masters painting.
Sean Mac Réamoinn talks to James White, who was the director of the gallery at the time.
They discuss the recent Milltown extension to the building. They also talk about the holdings and what goes into managing a gallery - how picture lending works, what exactly is involved in buying or restoring a picture and a look at where art appreciation was at in 1968.
You can visit the National Gallery of Ireland website here.
Presented and Produced by Sean Mac Réamoinn.
First Broadcast 17th November 1968
