Story Notes
Born in October 1904 in Inniskeen Co. Monaghan, Patrick Kavanagh is regarded as one of the foremost Irish poets of the 20th Century, and is famous worldwide for his works such as "On Raglan Road" and "The Great Hunger".
As a poet he was known for his ability to capture and recount Irish life through reference to the everyday and commonplace.
Over his career, Kavanagh was influential to many other greats of the literary world, including Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney.
In 1968, the year after his death, a group of Kavanagh's friends erected a monument in his memory along the banks of the Grand Canal at Mespil Road. On the 17th of March every year, friends and fans of Kavanagh's work still gather at this bench to sit and remember one of Ireland's greats.
This documentary presents an examination of his work, and his life.
First Broadcast on 15th September 1968
