Story Notes
Like every symbol, a flag always has a story behind it. The Irish Tricolour of Green, White and Orange is no different.
A point of great national pride, the Irish flag has represented us abroad in many sporting and other global events.
Flown during the 1916 rising, the tricolour captured the national imagination as the banner of the new revolutionary Ireland. Its official use began in 1922 and its position as our national flag was confirmed in 1937 under formal law in the constitution which states that "The National Flag is the tricolour of green, white and orange".
This documentary is a tribute to our national flag and everything it represents, and an insight into one of Ireland's most recognised symbols worldwide.
First Broadcast 17th March 1963.
