Martyn, Edward was born on the 31st January 1859 at his mother's family home at Masonbrook, Loughrea, Co. Galway.

He was the elder of two sons to Anne Martyn and John Martyn. He was educated at Belvedere College, Dublin, and Beaumont College, Windsor. A man who often desribed himself as self-educated he returned to Galway after a stint away at college, where he began – against the advice of friends – to re-build much of Tulira Castle in neo-gothic style, employing the architect George Ashlin.
