Story Notes
In October 1895 one of the great hymn writers of the 19th century, Cecil Frances Alexander, died in Derry. The French composer Gounod claimed that in the simplicity of Mrs Alexanders words, her poems set themselves to music. Her contribution to the repertory of devotional hymns is commemorated by the Choir of Christ Church Cathedral under the direction of Mark Dooley. Sarah McDonald explores Victorian hymnody, specifically Mrs Alexander's writings, with Dean John Patterson.
