Story Notes
Brid Ni Dhomhnaill was principal at Recess National School in County Galway during the late 1980's. A boycott began against her classes when she campaigned for an all Irish mass in a nearby Irish speaking area.
This led to a dispute with the then parish priest, of her school, Fr. Gabriel Charles which is turn led to an empty classroom for 5yrs until the school eventually shut in 1991.
Recess school is in Roundstone parish. During the dispute Fr. Gabriel Charles and was replaced by Fr. John Cosgrove.
It was hoped that an agreement could be reached with the changing circumstances - but unfortunately this was not to be the case.
The story of Recess school is a very complicated one - and over 20 years later looking back, possibly an unneccessary one.
