Through the stories of the people who lived through the regimes of Papa Doc and Baby Doc Duvalier, 'Stories from the Black' Republic traces the horrors of the Dubaliers' private army the Ton Ton Macoutes.
It also tracks the rise of the democratic movement through the work of the Creole movement, Radio Haiti and the rise of the Catholic priest Jean Bertrand Aristide as the voice of the poor.
Kay Sheehy also talks to the writer Edwidge Danticat, Michele Montas the wife of Jean Dominique the co-founders of Radio Haiti, Jean Yves Urfee a former supporter of Aristide and Fr Gerard Jean Juste, priest and key supporter of the Aristide the President in exile.
