Story Notes
Writer Sheelagh Conway, grew up in Limehill, East Galway in the 1950's. Limehill, is a village in East Galway, Ireland which is steeped in natural beauty from stone walls with rolling flat green fields. Conway emigrated to Canada to further her career and became involved with the Women's Movement.
Like many Emigrants who leave home, we always want to return to our home at some point. Sheelagh, met with RTÉ Producer John Quinn as they both travelled to East Galway to hear and see the people she had left. In this documentary we hear the relationship between families and church.
During her time in Canada, Conway produces us with visions of women who have struggled against sexism, poverty, neo-colonialism and religious constraints. Her book is called, 'The faraway hills are green: voices of Irish women in Canada'. Published by Toronto, Women's Press 1992.
Produced and presented by John Quinn.
First broadcast March 2nd 1994
